What is TENS? What are the Benefits?
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It is used by our chiropractic orthopedists to alleviate acute pain. It works through creating a release of endorphins and enkephalins. This is released by your body and is a part of its pain relief system. TENS also stimulates a different nerve than your traditional pain nerve. The nerve stimulated by TENS travels faster than the pain nerve. This can reach the brain before the pain does and is effective at pain gating, or blocking pain at the brain level.
Interferential Current, a Type of TENS
Interferential current or IFC is one of the most utilized at Stine Chiropractic Clinic. As a type of TENS it has all of the above mentioned effects and more. The reason we use IFC is due to its ability to produce what is called a “beat frequency.” This is where the two different leads intersect in the center and interfere with each other resulting in another frequency or beat frequency that travels up and down the spine, or area of pain. This can be used on any part of the body, including extremities.
Other Types of TENS
There are many types of TENS and at Stine Chiropractic Clinic we are able to use a majority of them in our chiropractic services, including sprain healing, bone healing, edema reduction, russian stim (to re-educate muscle), and a few others. With the use of these other types of TENS we are able to effectively treat a wide range of orthopedic conditions.
Nutritional Advice
Chiropractic services don’t stop with adjustment or manipulation. Our chiropractic services incorporate the whole body, and this includes nutrition. Some chronic diseases have been proven to be helped by a drastic change in nutrition. Here at Stine Chiropractic, we use whole-food, plant-based options to complement your care. We also have a certified vegan chef in office!
Why Nutrition is Included in Chiropractic Services
Some diseases of the musculoskeletal condition can be attributed to nutritional deficiencies in the body. In order to allow your body to heal, changes in what we put into them may be necessary. Some musculoskeletal and systemic conditions caused by nutritional deficiencies are:
- Multiple Sclerosis (studies suggest vitamin D as a contributing deficiency)
- Paresthesia or bizarre sensations in the hands and feet (can be caused by different B vitamin deficiencies or overabundance)
- Cramping (arm and leg cramps may be caused by electrolyte deficiencies easily corrected by diet) .
- High blood pressure (blood pressure can be easily elevated if we don’t eat foods high in a potent vasodilator called nitric oxide)
- This can be found in the highest concentration in arugula. A plant that goes well in a salad. Another food with this compound is red beets.
- Diabetes (contrary to the popular belief that carbs are the major culprit, this may not be completely true.)
- Carbohydrates are comprised of 3 different types: Fiber, Starches, and simple sugars. The main culprit being simple sugars, and dairy is one of them. Fiber and starch as a carbohydrate are actually shown in studies to control blood sugar due to their large structure.
- Dyslipidemias or high cholesterol.
- This happens when our diet contains foods high in cholesterol. The largest being animal products. Increasing fiber has a large impact on lowering cholesterol naturally.
These are only a few of the nutritional considerations of chronic illness. This is largely why Stine Chiropractic Clinic includes them as part of our chiropractic services. For more information, such as documentaries, recipes, and general information, click here.
Spinal Manipulation
We use diversified technique as part of our chiropractic services, which is performed with a high-velocity, low-amplitude manipulation to enhance joint biomechanics, stimulate mechanoreceptors, and aid in the restoration of normal joint motion.
Flexion Distraction
Flexion distraction technique, which is done to increase nutrition of the disc by stretching the disc, aids in delivering nutrients into the disc called imbibition. It also helps with restoring the normal gliding motion of the posterior facet joints that are commonly irritated with repetitive motions and sustained postures.
Soft Tissue Mobilization
This can include trigger point therapy, ischemic compression, or any instrument assisted technique. The goal here is to include this as part of our chiropractic services to aid in muscle relaxation. Trigger point therapy is very effective in dealing with referred pain syndromes that can accompany neck pain and back pain. Ischemic compression is part of the trigger point service. Instrument assisted technique may be needed for some of the most stubborn trigger points found with neck pain or even back pain. This uses a metal device to help mobilize the tight and tender muscle. It also breaks down adhesions, or little scar formations in the muscle that frees up the muscle’s normal contraction. This is due to the perpendicular force of the tool to the muscle fibers that is especially powerful to improper healing.
Types of Manipulation or Adjustments
There are many different types of chiropractic techniques or adjustments that can be included in chiropractic services. Ask us about these chiropractic services.
Radiology Services
These are done onsite and help the doctors evaluate for any congenital anomalies, fractures, comorbidities (arthritis, etc.), and predisposing postural abnormalities. The x-rays taken on your first visit will typically be interpreted and explained to you on the same day. Radiology services are in the scope of practice for a chiropractor and at Stine Chiropractic Clinic we strive to be the clinic all patients deserve.
Utilizing radiology in our chiropractic services allows for a more in-depth look into the condition at hand. It also helps our clinic give you the information and education you need for the best chance of resolution conservatively. Back pain, neck pain, or extremity pain — our radiology services cover it all.
What Can You See on X-ray?
The main thing seen on x-ray is skeletal structure. This can be a useful imaging to identify the following: degenerative disc disease, foraminal stenosis, fracture, spondylosis or spurs, bone density changes, anatomical structure of bone, different types of arthritis, skeletal maturity, and more.
What Can’t X-ray Find?
X-ray has limitations, the largest being the ability to image soft tissues like ligaments, muscle, and tendons. The imaging of choice for these structures would be MRI. As chiropractic orthopedists, Stine Chiropractic Clinic is able to send out for this special imaging if needed. This is due to the fact that large imaging centers perform this type of imaging and is not likely to be found in a private practice.
Lifestyle Advice
We often find it helpful to coach our patients on certain activities they should avoid or do differently to avoid aggravating their particular health challenge. Our goal is to help every patient achieve a fulfilling and happy lifestyle full of the activities they enjoy most. We recognize that each of our patients is a whole person, and help them to reach true health and wellness. For more information on how you can make a change for the best health click here.
Lab Services
Blood drawing (venipuncture) is performed onsite and sent to the lab to aid in the diagnosis of any comorbidities that may be present such as diabetes, arthritis, thyroid malfunction, blood clot, etc. We also use this to evaluate for systemic issues that may be mimicking a musculoskeletal issue. Another procedure that is in the scope of chiropractic is lab work. As so, we choose to include it in our chiropractic services.
Whether labs are part of your general physical information or to follow up on previous labs that were out of range, we can help. We go over the results with you personally when they come back. We are able to give you certain things to do at home to better these values if out of range. Using reputable sources that can help make the change like Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
