Main Uses Of Cholesterol In The Body

The body uses cholesterol for the synthesis of hormones, cell membranes, and it is also used to create cholic acid. As much as 80 percent of synthesized cholesterol from the liver is converted into cholic acid, which in combination of other substances, created bile acids. For the purpose of this article we will focus on bile acid synthesis since we are focusing on natural ways to reduce cholesterol. Bile acids (cholic acid and other substances) after creation get delivered to its storage organ, the gallbladder, which holds the substance until it is needed.

The use of bile acids are for the digestion and emulsification of ingested fats. The bile acids are released into the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum to start breaking down ingested fats. It then later is reabsorbed in the last portion of the small intestine called the terminal ileum. This reabsorption is estimated to be at around 90%. This percentage changes when we consume a diet high in materials that bind the bile salts keeping them from being reabsorbed and instead carry them to excretion in the feces.

This can be done quite effectively with foods high in fiber like oat bran. The lower percentage of reabsorption will yield lower overall levels of cholesterol, mainly in the Low-density lipoproteins or LDL. LDL is the “bad cholesterol” and when the liver spends more time on creating new bile acids from synthesized cholesterol, then the less time it spends creating bad cholesterol or LDLs.

How Do You Lower Cholesterol Naturally?

This can be done through simple dietary modifications that rids the body of created cholesterols. Cholesterol is formed by the body to meet our bodies demands for them. It’s estimated that the body creates up to 75% of our total cholesterol, and is done so by the liver. The other 25% comes through the diet. However most Americans consume more than the 25% needed from diet. This creates a surplus of cholesterol. The simplest way to reduce cholesterol levels is to reduce the amount consumed from the diet, or remove it completely.

To reduce or remove cholesterol completely, from the diet, means not consuming animal products. Meats, eggs, fish, and dairy products are high in cholesterol. Removing these reduces dietary intake tremendously, and makes your body produce it naturally, ridding the body of any excess stored in the liver. Adding more fruits, vegetables and whole grains increases fiber content, which is necessary for cholesterol excretion.

Without fiber 90% of the cholesterol in the form of bile salts, is reabsorbed and used again. This is the problem with low fiber diets coupled with high meat, dairy, chicken, and egg consumption that adds to cholesterol load. Fiber binds the bile and excretes it through the feces reducing the 90% recycled dose of the cholesterol in the form of bile salts. This is the only way to excrete the cholesterol and to reduce cholesterol naturally. On top of excreting more cholesterol, it also makes the liver focus on creating more bile acids and less time on creating bad cholesterol or LDLs.

What Foods Flush Out Cholesterol Naturally

In order to reduce cholesterol naturally, we need to consume the right foods. Eating foods naturally low in cholesterol is a good start, but eliminating them almost completely is a better start. Avoid saturated fats and increase your fiber content. Men need 32 grams of fiber daily, while women need 28-30 grams daily. Fiber content is only found in your plant based foods, so chances are if you eat very few vegetables or plants, you are not getting your fiber.

Things rich in fiber include beans, lentils, fruits, and some cereals high in oat bran, to learn more about oat bran vs. oatmeal you can take a look here. Increasing fiber and decreasing cholesterol consumption will reduce cholesterol naturally. Reducing cholesterol intake will also lower the amount of fats you consume throughout a normal day, leading to a collateral improvement in weight. When weight reduces so will blood pressure and risk factors for other chronic illnesses, like diabetes, and atherosclerosis or vessel wall plaquing.

There are many benefits to reducing cholesterol intake. One of the biggest as we commonly hear is from heart disease especially vessel wall plaquing. There have been no diets to show reversal of this disease except for the whole food plant based diet. This is why it is so important. You can access the review here.

What Cholesterol Causes Plaquing

The main cholesterol labeled as “bad” cholesterol is referring to low-density lipoproteins. This increases with meals high in saturated fats. Reducing saturated fat content lowers circulating blood levels of cholesterol, protecting the artery walls from plaquing.

This can be seen with a simple example of feeding rabbits a high cholesterol containing diet and looking for signs of elevated arterial plaquing. Rabbits being mostly vegetarian have low blood levels of cholesterol normally. Change their diet to consume much more cholesterol causes them to be riddled with cholesterol plaquing.

Bottom line here is that lowering cholesterol consumption leads to decrease in heart disease. Its been estimated that any 1mg/dl decrease in LDL concentration yields a 2% decrease in chance of death from heart disease from plaquing.

The best way to achieve this is to reduce saturated fat intake and high cholesterol meals. Activity is another consideration but lowering cholesterol can happen significantly with dietary change alone. Best diet to achieve these goals is the whole food plant based diet. Eating things from the ground, increasing whole grains, switching to brown rice instead of white, whole wheat bread and removing white bread, eating whole grain pasta and removing white pasta. Making this change will positively affect your life.

Signs Of High Cholesterol

There are a few signs of high cholesterol in addition to high levels on lab testing. Some of these signs should be indicators that you may need to reduce cholesterol naturally. To see information on cholesterol numbers when measured through labs and what they mean click here.

There are 2 different signs of high cholesterol levels that can be seen in or around the eyes.

The first one is cholesterol deposits on the eyelid or in the area of the depression between the eye and the nose. These are called xanthomas. Xanthomas are seen as yellow spots around the eye as deposits of fat form. It is important to note that not everyone with high cholesterol will have this physical sign.

The second sign is something called arcus senilus. This can be as an indicator of high cholesterol. This is seen as greyish circles around the colored portion of the eye (iris). The deposits of fats are not in the iris but the cornea, which is the clear portion on top of the iris, as well as the limbus. It is seen to be more severe if onset is prior to age 40 and if it is in just one eye. It occurs normally in a majority of individuals over 60. For more information on this click here.

What Affects Your Blood Concentration Of Cholesterol

This is largely related to how much fat you consume. When we eat a large cholesterol meal, the levels in our blood elevate. When we test for these numbers we do so mainly after fasting. This can give us a lower number when talking about levels as an indicator of health. Saturated fats have been found to be a very potent cholesterol elevator in the blood. Reducing amounts of fat in our diet positively affects these levels. Oils are a large contributor as well, as many things are made or cooked with processed oils. Becoming oil free, while a small challenge has tremendous benefit for cholesterol levels.
