Foot Pain

Foot pain can make walking, standing, exercising, and other daily activities uncomfortable. Symptoms may develop suddenly following an injury or gradually over time due to repetitive stress, changes in foot mechanics, arthritis, or other underlying conditions.

Because many different conditions can produce similar symptoms, determining the source of the pain is an important part of treatment. Pain may originate from the heel, arch, ball of the foot, or toes, and each area may be affected by a variety of orthopedic, neurological, or arthritic disorders.

At Stine Chiropractic Clinic, evaluation includes a thorough orthopedic and neurological examination to help identify the cause of your symptoms. Once a diagnosis is established, treatment is focused on reducing pain, improving function, and helping patients return to their normal activities as quickly and safely as possible.

Arch & Midfoot Pain

Pain involving the arch or midfoot may be associated with changes in foot mechanics, degenerative joint disease, repetitive stress, or structural abnormalities affecting the foot.

Flat feet (pes planus) and high arches (pes cavus) can alter the way forces are distributed throughout the foot during walking and other activities. In some patients, these structural differences may contribute to pain, fatigue, instability, or abnormal stress on joints and soft tissues.

Arthritis affecting the joints of the midfoot may cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Stress fractures may also develop from repetitive loading and commonly produce localized pain that worsens with weight-bearing activities.

Common causes of arch and midfoot pain:

  • Flat Feet (Pes Planus)
  • High Arches (Pes Cavus)
  • Midfoot Arthritis
  • Stress Fractures

Pain at the Ball of the Foot

Pain at the ball of the foot is commonly associated with repetitive stress, changes in foot mechanics, nerve irritation, or injury. Symptoms may include aching, burning, tingling, numbness, or discomfort that worsens during walking or other weight-bearing activities.

Metatarsalgia is a general term used to describe pain involving the forefoot and may develop from increased pressure beneath the metatarsal heads. Morton’s neuroma occurs when tissue surrounding a nerve becomes thickened, often producing burning pain, numbness, or the sensation of standing on a small pebble. Stress fractures may also cause localized forefoot pain and tenderness that gradually worsens with activity.

Common conditions creating pain in the ball of the foot:

  • Metatarsalgia
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Stress Fractures

Heel Pain

Heel pain may develop gradually over time or occur following an injury. Several different conditions can produce similar symptoms, making an accurate diagnosis important.

Patients with plantar fasciitis often report pain with their first few steps in the morning or after periods of rest. Fat pad syndrome commonly causes pain directly beneath the heel and may worsen with prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces. Pain at the back of the heel may be associated with Achilles tendinopathy, or bursitis.

Heel spurs are frequently seen on X-rays and are often associated with chronic stress where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone. Although many patients assume the spur itself is causing the pain, heel spurs are commonly considered a sign of longstanding traction stress and may not be the primary source of symptoms.

Common causes of heel pain:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Heel Spurs
  • Fat Pad Syndrome
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Bursitis
  • Haglund’s Deformity (Pump Bump)

Toe Pain

Toe pain may be associated with injury, arthritis, crystal-related joint disease, or structural changes affecting the joints of the foot. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, stiffness, redness, or difficulty walking.

Bunions are a common structural condition affecting the base of the great toe and may lead to pain, swelling, and difficulty wearing certain types of footwear. Athletic injuries such as turf toe and sand toe can develop following excessive stress to the joints and soft tissues of the forefoot. Arthritic conditions including osteoarthritis, gout, and CPPD (pseudogout) may also affect the toes and often produce pain, swelling, and reduced joint mobility.

Common causes of toe pain:

  • Bunions (Hallux Valgus)
  • Turf Toe
  • Sand Toe
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout
  • CPPD (Pseudogout)

Comprehensive Foot Pain Evaluation

Because many foot conditions produce similar symptoms, determining the source of the pain is an important part of treatment. Symptoms involving the heel, arch, midfoot, ball of the foot, or toes may arise from a variety of orthopedic, neurological, or arthritic conditions, each requiring a different treatment approach.

At Stine Chiropractic Clinic, evaluation includes a thorough orthopedic and neurological examination to help identify the structures contributing to your symptoms and establish an accurate diagnosis. Once the source of the problem has been identified, treatment recommendations are tailored to the individual patient and condition.

Depending on the diagnosis, conservative treatment options may include FAKTR® soft tissue treatment, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), therapeutic ultrasound, supportive taping techniques, bracing recommendations, rehabilitation exercises, activity modification, and guidance regarding footwear. Treatment is focused on reducing pain, improving function, and helping patients return to their normal activities as quickly and safely as possible. We utilize chiropractic orthopedic care coupled with therapeutic modalities that can make a difference in more than just the spine.
